A Transatlantic Exploration of Physical Activity in Early Childhood

Early childhood is a critical time for developing lifelong physical activity habits. Children’s activity levels are influenced by their:

  • Individual skills and preferences

  • Role models (parents, educators, teachers)

  • Everyday environments

The Active Beginnings Study is an international research project exploring the factors that shape physical activity in children under the age of 5 in Canada and the Netherlands. This study aims to better understand the barriers and supports that influence children’s physical activity, and how these differ across countries.

Findings from this study will:

  • Help improve physical activity opportunities for young children

  • Inform training and education for early childhood educators and teachers

  • Support healthier developmental outcomes in early childhood

  • Strengthen international collaboration between Canada and the Netherlands
